Honor, Celebration & Support

In November of 1999, Elizabeth Ciunci was the victim of a horrendous car accident caused by a drunk driver headed in the wrong direction on the Schuylkill Expressway. This beautiful 18 year old woman had just begun her college studies with the hopes of obtaining a degree in education for special needs students. From this tragedy the decision was made by family and friends to create a family-oriented event to honor and celebrate her life. That event was the Butterfly Run.

The small, hometown event has since evolved into the Elizabeth Ciunci Foundation, which hosts the annual Butterfly Run over Easter weekend and a biennial silent auction. Proceeds from the events provide the bulk of the money to fund two scholarships for students pursuing a career in special needs education.

The Elizabeth Ciunci Foundation’s purpose is to elevate a community awareness, especially among high school students, of the dangers associated with drinking and driving, and to support other community organizations which shared Elizabeth’s interest and passion in helping others in need.
